Art in the Empty Bowl

Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground
— Rumi

Art in the Empty Bowl  asks the question, “How does your art or craft connect with Zen practice—whether you are a novice or experienced, a poet or a musician, a potter or repairer of bowls?

Current Feature

This month AEB interviews Sumi-e artist Paul F. Schubert. A long-time student of Roshi Robert Kennedy, Paul is the author of Sumi-e Speaks, a collection of his paintings accompanied by Zen stories and verses.

Paul is an educator, chemical engineer, and longtime student of Sumi-e, the style of ink-wash painting Zen Buddhist monks brought to Japan a thousand years ago. Often landscapes, the scenes depicted may be imaginary or actual views and sometimes (as in Paul’s work) a combination of both. As you’ll see, the yearly camping visits he and his wife make to Yosemite National Park, where they serve as guides, inspire his imagination.
